Hoosier Stephen Wright admits his insatiable hunger for decorative design.  This passion is his strength and a main ingredient in his personal design ethic.  Educated at Indiana University and the Rochester Institute of Technology School for American Craftsmen, he supplemented his BFA and MFA with an apprenticeship in Denmark in the early 1970’s.  This apprenticeship rounded out his comprehensive knowledge of not only design but production as well.  Multiple degrees in hand, he designed for Gorham Silver and later Hallmark Cards.  He eventually set up his own private metals studio and has never stopped.

After surviving a massive stroke in March of 2000 when he was just 47 years of age, his determination kept him on the charts as an internationally acclaimed designer even through his struggle relearning to speak.  The desire to continue producing his captivatingly original jewelry meant that he had to reinvent himself throughout his rehabilitation, and his discovery of new ways to remain viable within the jewelry community has paid off. 

In 2004, he was awarded North America’s highest design award, “Best of Show” by the American Gem Trade Association.  This recognition of his work is considered the “Oscar” of jewelry design, and follows numerous other local, national, and international awards for his designs over the years, including design and manufacturing honors from the American Gem Trade Association, Platinum Guild International, DeBeers Diamonds Today and Designer Showcase, and the American Pearl Association.
